This is one of 20 NET Map & Guide Suggested Hikes*. Travel past cascading streams, a cave once inhabited by a legendary hermit, and a scenic vista. Parking is on Briggs St off Holmes Ave on north side of MA 2, west of Erving center. From trailhead adjacent to private residence, follow the NET northbound along Briggs Brook ravine to footbridge at base of waterfall. Here Farley Ledge Trail branches left (this optional 2.2-mi side loop passes an interesting series of rock ledges and giant boulders; portions are steep and rugged). Follow the NET right on ascent along brook, then continue along ridges below Northfield Mountain summit reservoir. After crossing Packard Brook, reach first junction with Hermit’s Castle side trail at 1.7 mi. Turn right and follow blue- blazed trail 0.4 mi to cave site, then continue uphill to upper junction with the NET. Turn left and follow the NET southbound past scenic vista, then follow the NET for 2.0 mi back to trailhead.
